Our little artists have been studying symmetry and the principle of design balance the past few weeks in the art room. Check out these in-progress symmetrical beetles being painted with watercolor paints by our third graders. Students drew half a beetle with black oil pastel, folded the paper on the midline or line of symmetry, then rubbed the two sides together. When they open it up, the black oil pastel lines have transferred over to the other side of the paper, and you can easily trace to make a symmetrical beetle! Magic! Happy Friday! |

As we welcomed in the new school year, students in 5th, 4th 3rd, and 2nd grades collaborated with their new team members at their tables, and even across grade levels, to create these beautiful Aztec-inspired patterned paintings! We learned about Aztec weavings, discussed their horizontal nature, and practiced brush handling as we painted. I am so proud of our bright, beautiful collaborations!! On the first day of art class, each and every class reads "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds and each student makes their very own dot. "The Dot" tells the story of a young artist who struggles to believe she is any good at drawing. She practices and practices, and finally has an art show and teaches another little boy to make his artwork. I want all of our little artists to know that art is just like any other subject: math, reading, dancing, karate, basketball, swimming. Whatever it is, we must practice to get better; we are not always given talents, but we can manifest them if we try.
